Although the “Self-portrait with white beret” is not his first canvas, his life's work can nonetheless be contained within these three self-portraits : in each of them is the same stance and the same profile over a span of thirty-six years. They cover a life devoted entirely to painting. If the first self-portrait is considered as his painting “initiation”, the third represents his “departure”. He died a few days after completing his last painting.
